Systemic Methods in Online Coaching: Designing Digital Consulting Rooms That Work
Coaching work has changed considerably in recent years. Many conversations no longer take place exclusively in person but also in digital consulting rooms.
This raises a central question for many coaches:
How can systemic methods be used in online coaching so that relationship, perception and process quality remain solid?
Digital rooms open up new possibilities for this. At the same time, they require deliberate design, both methodically and technically.
This article looks at how systemic methods can be used online and what role digital method rooms play.
Online coaching as a consulting room in its own right
Online coaching is often first associated with video conferencing. Conversations work well that way. Yet practice shows that systemic work often lives on visualization, spatial perspectives and shared symbolic spaces.
Many systemic methods work with:

symbolic figures or cards
changes of perspective
shared surfaces for reflection
Digital method rooms make such elements tangible online as well. Modern coaching platforms create interactive workspaces in which coach and clients can work simultaneously.

The constellation board in online coaching
The constellation board is one of the best-known methods in systemic consulting. Relationships, roles or conflicts are represented spatially with figures.
In the digital room, figures can be positioned, rotated and moved just the same. The result is a visual representation of systems that opens new perspectives on relationships.
The development of the constellation board goes back to Ulrich Wilken and Kurt Ludewig. Ulrich Wilken also accompanies the implementation of the constellation board in the digital room of coachingspace and brings his many years of experience into the training program.
Digital variants of the constellation board additionally allow changes of perspective, such as the view from the position of a figure.
The Inner Team in the digital coaching room
Another frequently used approach in coaching is the Inner Team model.
The model was developed at the Schulz von Thun Institute for Communication and describes inner voices or personality parts that relate to each other in decision processes.
In coaching, these voices are often made visible, for example as figures or positions in the room.
In the digital coaching room, the individual parts can be represented and arranged together, creating a visual overview of inner dynamics.
The training program takes up this method together with speakers from the circle of the Schulz von Thun Institute.
Positioning cards in coaching
Card work is one of the most versatile methods in coaching. Cards help clients locate topics, change perspectives or make resources visible.
One example is the positioning cards by Coachingcard, developed by Antonia Klein-Nikolaidis. They provide visual orientation in the coaching process and can also be used in the digital room.
The Map of States of Being is also used in online settings to make emotional states visible.
Digital coaching rooms let you position figures on such cards and look at them together. A dialogue emerges about positions, relationships and possibilities for change.
Text-based online counseling and journal work
Alongside synchronous sessions, text-based online counseling is gaining importance.
In coachingspace, a journal can be used for this, which clients use for reflection between sessions. Thoughts, questions and insights can be captured there and developed further together.
Work with text-based counseling formats draws, among other sources, on the experience of the German Association for Psychosocial Online Counseling (DGOB), which has accompanied the development of digital counseling formats in Germany for many years.

Digital counseling places special demands on data protection and confidentiality.

What remains decisive is the systemic attitude: digital tools are not a solution in themselves. They merely open a room in which consulting can take place.
