An Experiment with the Inner Team and ChatGPT in coachingspace
Introduction
The Inner Team, developed by Friedemann Schulz von Thun, is a powerful method for self-reflection and exploring inner parts. In practice, this method is normally used not in self-coaching but in synchronous online counseling or coaching, where the coach guides the process. Still, there are approaches that use the Inner Team as self-coaching between sessions. In this experiment, I applied the Inner Team method in coachingspace.net and then analyzed the results with ChatGPT.
coachingspace and the Inner Team in self-coaching
coachingspace offers a secure platform for online coaching and systemic consulting. Normally, the Inner Team is used in a synchronous setting where the coach leads the client through the process. But with good content preparation and a short technical introduction, the client can also set up the Inner Team independently between sessions. This requires a precise description of how to elicit the parts and clear instructions for the client. The resulting picture can then be discussed and developed in detail in the next session.
The image shows an example of such a self-coaching approach, in which a client tried to visualize his inner parts regarding a relationship situation:
Using ChatGPT as an experimental systemic consultant
The experiment then examined whether, and at what quality, ChatGPT can analyze such a picture as a "systemic consultant". It is important to stress that this is an experiment, not an established best practice. ChatGPT was asked to reflect on the depicted inner conflicts and dynamics and to develop systemic questions about them. You can see the result of this analysis here:
Systemic questions and hypotheses
ChatGPT identified several hypotheses, including attachment insecurity, a conflict between needs, and self-worth issues. These were complemented with systemic questions meant to help the client dive deeper into self-reflection and explore possible solutions.
Conclusion
This experiment shows that the combination of coachingspace and ChatGPT opens interesting perspectives for self-reflection and self-coaching. Although ChatGPT cannot fully replace the role of a human systemic consultant, it offers valuable support in analysis and reflection. What matters is that such experiments take place in a safe frame and that the results are discussed with an experienced coach in the next session.
coachingspace thus offers not only a secure platform for online coaching, but also innovative ways to use methods like the Inner Team effectively in self-coaching.
