Dear community,
we've arranged another wonderful cooperation for you: as of now, the genogram from GenoEasy is part of coachingspace. And what's special about it isn't just that the method is now available to you, it's how: you can now use it synchronously, right in the middle of a video session, together with your clients.
Why This Makes a Difference
The standalone GenoEasy software is primarily designed as a preparation and documentation tool: create a genogram, maintain it, print it out. Embedded in coachingspace, something new becomes possible. You build the online genogram together with your client live, while seeing and talking to each other, just like you already know from the constellation board or the inner team.
And because it runs online, access is easy to share too. The link goes to everyone involved, for instance to family members, who can add their own perspective and their own knowledge about the family history between sessions. That way, the genogram doesn't just grow during the session, it grows with everyone involved, safely and without extra effort.
A Method with a Long History
The genogram is not a new invention. Its roots lie in genealogical family trees; it only became a psychological tool in the 1950s through family therapist Murray Bowen, who observed in his studies how emotional patterns are passed on across generations. The name itself was coined by his student Philip Guerin in 1972, and the standardized symbol language still used today (squares, circles, and the different line types for relationship quality) goes back to the 1985 standard work by Monica McGoldrick and Randy Gerson. This connection to the systemic tradition, for example to circular questioning as used by the Milan School, is exactly what makes the genogram a method that fits seamlessly into existing counseling processes.
What's Available to You in Coachingspace
The online genogram doesn't stand alone. In the Individual package, which includes the method, you continue to work with GDPR-compliant video conferencing, our whiteboard, the journal for written work between sessions, and client management, all in one place, without switching between programs. Anyone who also wants to use the online constellation board, the inner team, or the positioning and impulse cards will find those in the Premium package.

A Conversation Tool, Not a Diagnostic Instrument
One honest note belongs here: the genogram as a method is barely researched in isolation, and the same family often looks different depending on who draws it. That doesn't make it less valuable, it just means using it for what it does best: a qualitative tool for structuring conversations and making patterns visible, not a measurement or diagnostic instrument.
Precisely because a genogram contains very personal information across several generations, sometimes about relatives who were never asked, data protection matters here more than usual. As with all of coachingspace, your data is 100% GDPR-compliant and secure on servers in Germany.
Anyone who wants to go deeper into the method will find further material on history, symbolism, and practice in the free GenoEasy Academy (in German).

As always, we look forward to your feedback, especially now at the start. Let us know what you like about the new method and what's still missing from your practice.
Warm regards,
your coachingspace team
