The Systemic Hero's Journey

The Systemic Hero's Journey

Introduction

Change rarely runs in a straight line. It is a movement between departure, doubt, challenge and maturing.

The systemic hero's journey by Prof. Dr. Holger Lindemann offers a powerful narrative structure for this: a model that understands change processes as a journey and supports coaches in accompanying, understanding and honoring paths of development.

With the new digital card set for the systemic hero's journey, these processes can now be visualized and shaped methodically right in coachingspace.

A model for change, self-reflection and accompaniment

The hero's journey, originally described by Joseph Campbell and systemically extended by Lindemann, shows archetypal phases of human development: from the ordinary world through the call to adventure to the return with the gift.

In systemic consulting it is used as a narrative structural model to frame individual and organizational change processes. It helps tell developments as stories, with turning points, mentors, trials and rewards.

The digital card set in coachingspace comprises ten structure cards that can be used individually or in combination, for example for:

  • biographical reflection

  • constellation work

  • timeline work

  • supervision

  • team or organizational development

The ten phases of the systemic hero's journey

  • The ordinary world: the starting point of the story. The journey begins here, often with a latent unease or an unspoken longing.

  • The call to adventure: an invitation to follow the inner movement.

  • The refusal: doubts, fears or resistance that cling to the familiar.

  • Meeting the mentors: people, inner voices or resources that provide orientation.

  • Crossing the threshold: the moment of setting out into the unknown.

  • Trials: confrontations, fields of learning and challenges.

  • Honoring the decisive tests: pausing, looking back and integrating.

  • The reward: insights, new abilities or newly won clarity.

  • The road back: transition into a new stability, often accompanied by farewells.

  • The new everyday life: integrating the change, returning to the world, transformed.

These ten phases form a map for change. They invite you to see coaching processes not as linear but as cyclical movements between departure, experience and integration.

The hero's journey as a reflection method for coaches

For coaches themselves, the hero's journey also offers a valuable frame for reflecting on their own professional path.

At the center stands the question:

"Which stations, challenges and turning points shape my path as a coach, and which superpowers have I developed along the way?"

The journey can be designed in five steps:

  • The call to the journey How did your path as a coach begin? What called you into this profession?

  • The first challenges Which hurdles, doubts or uncertainties have you overcome?

  • Meeting supporters & discovering your superpower Who or what strengthened you? Which ability has revealed itself as your "superpower"?

  • The great test and transformation When did you feel: Now I truly am a coach?

  • The return with the gift With which attitude, ability or vision do you go into the world today?

This structure opens an appreciative space for self-reflection and professional growth, beyond performance thinking or goal orientation.

Shaping narrative work digitally

In coachingspace, the hero's journey can be set up visually with a few clicks. The digital card set is integrated directly into the platform and can be combined with methods such as the constellation board, the whiteboard or the impulse cards.

The result is dialogical, interactive processes, in one-on-one coaching as well as in teams or supervision. The cards invite you to make stories visible, honor transitions and activate resources.

Examples from practice:

  • Constellation along the phases: Where do I currently stand on my journey?

  • Work with inner parts: Which voices accompany me, and which hold me back?

  • Resource work: Who are my mentors? Which gifts do I already carry within me?

Conclusion: the hero's journey as a resonance space for coaching and development

The systemic hero's journey combines narrative depth with methodical clarity. It gives coaches a way to frame development processes symbolically, in language, image and encounter.

With its digital implementation in coachingspace, it becomes a living instrument that connects reflection, creativity and systemic thinking.
